Wyboo is thought to be an Indian tribal name meaning wide river and Santee is thought to mean pretty water. The city was named for John Lawrence Manning, who was elected to both chambers in the General Assembly. He was later chosen by the Assembly to serve as Governor of South Carolina from 1852 to 1854.
