McEntire military installation is located near Eastover, S.C., approximately 15 miles southeast of the city of Columbia, and is about 2,400 acres. It now serves as a joint base, meaning it supports operations for multiple branches of the U.S. military, primarily the South Carolina Air National Guard and the South Carolina Army National Guard.
The base has a history dating back to its establishment during World War II. Formed in 1946, the base is named after Brigadier General Barnie B. McEntire, the first commander of the South Carolina Air National Guard. General McEntire died when he rode his malfunctioning F-104 into the Susquehanna River to avoid crashing in a densely populated Harrisburg, PA.
McEntire is home to both the 245th Air Traffic Control Squadron and the 169th Fighter Wing, an Air National Guard unit equipped with F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. Serving both a combat mission, which involves providing air support and defense capabilities, and a support mission, which involves aiding in disaster response and relief efforts to South Carolina's homeland security and defense, the S.C. Air National Guard provides world class capabilities for both our state and our nation.
Additionally, McEntire JNGB has become home to the South Carolina Army National Guard contributing to the integration and cooperation between different branches of the military and enhancing the overall capabilities of the armed forces.
